The Werewolves of Quebec

The House of the Wolf
In the barren arctic, a white wolf journeys alone across the tundra. All his life he has dreamed of the strange creatures called humans that dwell far to the south - creatures that wolf lore says have an ancient mystical kinship with his own species. Abandoning his pack, he sets out to make contact with human beings and learn the truth.
In the state of Vermont, a young girl embarks on her own journey of self-discovery. 18-year-old Chantal Boisvert never knew her parents, and she is determined to learn more about them -- especially her French Canadian father, who died in mysterious circumstances. When she arrives in the province of Quebec the wealthy Boisvert family gives Chantal a seemingly warm and loving welcome. But then strange and sinister things start to happen. Why do her relatives slip away into the forest after sundown? Why does she keep dreaming at night of being a wolf running in the wild? Who is the attractive pale-haired boy who keeps turning up, and why do he and his friends seem so concerned for her safety?
Could it possibly be true that the Boisverts are loups garous - werewolves?
The Way of the Wolf
Chantal Boisvert’s quest to seek out her late father's family in Quebec took a shocking turn when she learned that the Boisverts were werewolves - and that she too had inherited their shapeshifting ability. But she has now come to see her inheritance as a blessing, and her love for the wolf-boy Raoul encourages her to begin a new life in Quebec.
There are dark forces at work in the werewolf community, however. A shadowy cabal of wealthy and powerful wolf-people is determined to keep humans from learning about their kind - even if it means murdering Chantal, Raoul and all their friends...

“Baird forgoes most of the modern werewolf traditions and favors a more natural approach to her depiction. She doesn't try to give a definite explanation of their existence, instead using werewolves and their lore as framework for an exploration of humanity and nature, and the relationship between the two. Her realistic yet loving outlook makes for a refreshingly optimistic read.”

The Wyrd of Willowmere

“This is not a run-of-the-mill teen witchcraft story. Alison Baird weaves her considerable knowledge of Wicca, feminist spirituality, and the goddess movement into an exciting and unusual witchcraft adventure that is ultimately about good versus evil. The first of a three-part series, The Witches of Willowmere is a welcome addition to all public and school libraries. Highly recommended.”
- Canadian Book Review Annual
“The problem is, we want to keep writing about this book –- it’s so good! – but if we do we will be giving the plot away, and we don’t want to spoil it for you. . . And, of course, Baird’s writing is as excellently crafted as ever.”
- The Hamilton Spectator
“Baird’s story-telling is first-rate. Claire is a believably strong and resilient yet unhappy and troubled young woman, and the plot is briskly-paced.”
- Resource Links
“The Witches of Willowmere is the first volume in what promises to be a fine new fantasy series for young adults. Baird skillfully weaves elements of the supernatural into a story whose setting and characters are contemporary with many of her readers. . . (and) uses history, description, imagery and voice to effectively create a solid base from which to further develop and explore story lines based on the theme of good and evil.”

- The Canadian Review of Materials
“This is a fabulous tale. . . Baird stylishly builds The Warding of Willowmere to a crescendo that will have juvenile readers hanging onto every word.”
- The Hamilton Spectator
“Bound to keep readers captivated. There are moments of sheer terror that are handled brilliantly by the author – and will keep the reader coming back to find out more.”
- Resource Links
“Claire’s tight wire act is as suspenseful as any you’ll find. . . Baird has done a masterful job of mixing and matching story elements.”
- Books in Canada

“Alison Baird of Oakville races us through this fabulous, gripping tale and deftly drops in dollops of informative stuff on shamans, spirits, art and the environment. Baird’s The Wyrd of Willowmere has everything: great writing, twisty plot and a message to ponder.”
- The Hamilton Spectator
“Baird’s ‘Willowmere Chronicles’ is a three-part tale of good versus evil that is wisely woven over three books and grandly brought to a climax and resolution in The Wyrd of Willowmere.”

When the Nazis threaten her island home, young Jean feels helpless and afraid. Little does she know that an even greater danger awaits her. While walking alone in the fields one day she becomes lost and is transported out of her own world into the Faerie realm of Avalon. The inhabitants of that world are also fighting a war, and seek a magical object, the Spear of Destiny, which can turn the tide of any battle in favor of its wielder. A desperate Jean joins in their quest, believing that the Spear’s power may also save her world from Hitler's forces.

The Hidden World

At the turn of the Millennium, Jean’s granddaughter Maeve is transported into Avalon by a magical brooch that once belonged to her grandmother. There she becomes embroiled in a life-and-death struggle between the people of Faerie and an army of demonic invaders. At the center of the conflict is the Holy Grail, an object of unparalleled protective power. Maeve and her new friends believe it can save them from the enemy – if only they can find it before the demons do…
“Very, very good indeed . . . (Baird’s) writing is as elegant as C.S. Lewis’ (the lord of Narnia . . . and that’s the highest praise indeed!) . . . We wait impatiently for the next installment in the Avalon saga.”
- The Hamilton Spectator

“The action is gripping, the blending of Celtic and Norse mythology, the Arthurian legends, and fairy lore deftly handled, and the conflicts complex. All in all, The Wolves of Woden is an enjoyable read which should be brought to the attention of any fantasy-loving teen.”
- Resource Links Magazine

“Often sequels end up being paler versions of the original. Happily, Alison Baird’s latest, the prequel to The Hidden World, actually improves upon its predecessor, creating an exciting and often truly magical narrative that will appeal to sophisticated teenaged readers.”
- Quill & Quire

“Baird has created an appealing and believable protagonist who is a worthy candidate to execute a complex quest . . . Fans of fantasy may lose themselves in Annwn and its struggles and anticipate another installment in the saga.”
- The Canadian Review of Materials

“The Wolves of Woden, with its fast-paced narrative and satisfying characters, is young-adult fantasy at its best. Jean’s beautifully realized adventures may remind some readers of C. S. Lewis’s Narnia series. Highly recommended.”
- Canadian Book Review Annual

“Baird has created a stunning fantasy world using Celtic myths and legends, but with her own unique twist . . . a well-realized world that combines history, mythology, folklore, and a darn good yarn to boot.”
- Books in Canada
“A compelling, scintillating tale of power and magic . . . one of the most polished, masterfully crafted tales of this genre.”
- The Telegram, St John’s
“Alison Baird scores again with The Hidden World. Baird’s prose is beautiful . . . a whiz-banger of a book.”
- The Hamilton Spectator
“An excellent addition to the tradition of such Canadian fantasists as Catherine Anthony Clark, Ruth Nichols, Welwyn Wilton Katz, and Joan Clark. Highly recommended.”
- Canadian Book Review Annual
